Someone hurt you, and they never said sorry. They never acknowledged what they did. They moved on with their life like nothing happened, and you are still standing in the wreckage trying to breathe normally again. You have been waiting for an apology that is never coming.
You know what happens when it gets quiet. You replay it: the conversation, the betrayal, the moment everything changed. The anger shows up at random, even in the middle of worship, and you smile through it while it sits in your chest like a stone. Worst of all, they don’t even know. They’re sleeping fine while you carry the weight of what they did. Here is what God says about that.
In This Article
God Is Not Asking You to Call It Okay
Start here: what they did was wrong. God does not dress it up, explain it away, or hand you a cliché about everything happening for a reason. He saw every moment of it, and he kept every tear.
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”Psalm 56:8
Not one tear you cried over this has been forgotten. God catalogued your pain the way a father catalogues every bruise on his child, with both tenderness and a promise that justice belongs to him.
Unforgiveness Punishes You, Not Them
Now the harder truth: the unforgiveness you are holding is not punishing them. It is punishing you. Every night you replay what they did, you reopen a wound that was trying to close. Every imaginary argument keeps you standing in the room where they hurt you, and they are not even in the room anymore. Bitterness feels like armor, as if letting go means they won. But bitterness is not armor. It is a prison, and you have been holding the key the whole time.
What Forgiveness Is Not
This is where most people misunderstand what God is asking. He is not asking you to say it was okay; it was not. He is not asking you to trust them again; trust is earned. He is not asking you to let them back into your life; boundaries are wisdom, not weakness. He is not asking you to forget; scars are not failures, they are proof you survived.
What he is asking is that you release the debt. Stop waiting for them to pay what they owe you. They cannot pay it, and they may never understand what they took. Forgiveness is not a gift to the one who hurt you. It is freedom for the one who was hurt.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”Ephesians 4:31-32
Hand the Justice to God
You do not have the strength to forgive them on your own, and you were never supposed to. Give the wound, the anger, and the verdict to the only righteous Judge.
“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”Romans 12:19
On the other side of that surrender, the replaying slows, the name that tightened your chest becomes just a name, and for the first time in longer than you can remember, you feel light. Not because they apologized. Because you chose freedom. You don’t have to forgive perfectly tonight. You just have to be willing to start, and God will do the rest.
Watch: They never apologized. God says forgive them anyway.
